A brief Auto-Biography by Mikee:
I started in Southern Califonia, Torrance. My Iowa born folks moved to New Jersey in the beggining of 1980 to pursue Manhattan, "The Land of Opportuity". I was always in the jazz bands, concert bands, marching bands, choirs, and theatrical produtions through primary and high schools. I played drums until my High School band director, Angelo Merola, decided to play some reverse psycology on me and deem me second chair drummer to my best friend Jason Kadlec instead of first chair in the tenth grade. Later I found out he thought this would make me a better drummer.
So I picked up the guitar and my best friend Jason and I started a band with Quincas Moriera, a Brazilian bassist from Chatham. The JD Patrick's Band ensued. We played parties, battle of the bands, churches, basically anywhere that would let us play. We even played a dive bar in the eleventh grade much to our parents dismay. Mostly Stevie Ray Vaghan, Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Originals. Then it was time to go to college. Cause that's what you do in America, Right?!? I attended William Paterson College, now known as 'WPU', for two years. As a Music Business Major I met many wonderful musicians and started a group called The 42 Main Street Delicatessen Band, a ten piece funk ensemble. I booked them all over NYC, NY State, and a little in NJ. We had the honor of headlining our own shows numerous times at The Wetlands, The Lion's Den, The New Music Cafe, and many other North East spots. We shared the stage with Maceo Parker, Groove Collective, Moon Boot Lover (pre Soulive), and many other North East Bands. After the group changed direction musically, so did I and moved to Boulder, Colorado.
In Boulder I got a job working in a Deli of all places and met bassist Bill Dube. Through Bill I reconnected with NJ friends Steve Vidaic and Joe Russo. Through them I met a ton of Boulder musicians. We played numerous House parties, bars, jam sessions, restaurants you name it. We just wanted to play. The line-up of musicians I played with spanned the gamut. Groups like Fat Mama, Chief Broom, Chupacabra, were big local bands at that time on the Boulder scene. After a few years of house gigs and a group called Superwhat! with, that's right, 2 other guys from Jersey (Brian Juan and Rick Chance) and 1 from Coneccticut (Mike Bosson), After two years of Superwhat, I joined The Motet.
My tenure with The Motet spanned four years. It was great! I played guitar, did the posters, website, mailing list, some PR, pretting much everything you do for a grass-roots musical group. Dave Watts and Scott Messersmith , the founders of the Group, took me 'on board' and opened my eyes to a whole other side of the music world. Touring, festivals, gigging night after night, seeing the whole country, band dynamics, and getting to play with some really killer musicians were just a few of the many things I gleened from that experience. Sharing the stage with The String Cheese Incident, Charlie Hunter, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, I could go on for a long time. The experience definitely concreted my passion for music and travel. Plus, I met Darla along the way at a destined encouter in Victor Idaho. After four years of eating ramen noodles and whatever the venue would give us. After a motor cycle accident, and life threatening ski accident, it was time to plant some roots.
Darla and I bought land near Crestone, Colorado in 2002. We wanted to attempt a more sustainable life style than what we were living. So, we moved on to our land in 2003. In 2004, we started building and got married. In 2005, we conceived a child, were still building, I made a record of original music and took a band on the road. In 2006, we had a child "Kinsman!" We have just moved into our off-the-grid geodesic dome home on 15 acres on Cottonwood Creek. So........now it's back music.
